Lato - Don't forget he also had the dribbling skills of Lionel Messi and the passing range of Paul Scholes. He was also great at defending set pieces.

It's a real mystery how he only got one England cap and played for us.

Had everything apart from pace, a real shame for us as much as it was for him to retire early.

In his all to brief spell with us Deano was top quality him and Bellamy would have been the best forward front two since Frankie and TC. He had the first touch and vision of Sheringham and the shooting, heading and finishing ability of Shearer. Would have undoubtedly gone on and got to 100 caps plus for England in my opinion. And of course it he would have inevitably gone onto a bigger club than West Ham at some point. I to remember where l was when l heard the news of his injury whilst training with England, driving back from the inept Passport Office in Peterborough.....again! lt was a bad day all round and of the course the injury turned out to be a lot worse than anyone thought.

First time i saw him, he was playinf for Crewe against Cheltenham on a Boxing day early 2000s. He was so far above everyone else on display, it was a case of what are bigger clubs thinking and can't scouts see this?

When he went to Norwich i was annoyed we'd missed out especially as he looked right at home in the premier league and then when we signed him, i couldn't believe it. There was talk of Newcastle wanting him to replace shearer but no one else came in and we got him.

Had injury not have robbed him of his future, he would have been one of the finest players to ever lace his boots up in our history. He was that good.

Full of promise and who knows what might have been, but if I take my claret and blue specs off I’d have to say he was not in the class of Shearer and/or Sheringham. If he was, he wouldn’t have been with us.

Sheer class. Was the Shearer of his generation. Still remember where I was when the news of his injury broke. Even accounting for all the shit we've been through since I started supporting us 35+ yrs ago his injury was the hardest pill to swallow. That night at Man City, that overhead kick at Nobes' testimonial! Just so unjust what happened to him given his talent and what a seemingly top bloke he is off the pitch.

He didn't have pace, and as the Premier League developed that would increasingly have been a weakness as lead striker. He was a natural ball player with good coordination so he could shoot with both feet, and timed his headers well without being dominant in the air. His best position would probably have been behind and supporting a more athletic striker.

Was somewhere between Alan Shearer and Teddy Sheringham. Had he carried on improving I doubt we would have held on to him for more that a couple more seasons at the time, would have loved to see him partner Tevez!

They rarely played together due to injury. On the rare occasions they did, we were on another level.

Didn’t curbishley do a interview about how he’s biggest regret wasn’t getting him & Bellamy together more often. Sure the handful of times they actually play together we won 3 of the games 3-0, Reading, Boro and someone else who escapes me.

I think the last time I saw Ashton was against Wigan We won 2-1, I’m sure he got both in the first half , I think ,think, he caught the second on his chest ,spun and stuck it away. Maybe be wildly wrong ! Wigan scored earlyish in the second half , we hung on, just the usual white knuckle ride with West Ham .

Ginger Frankie ended up with a flowing blonde main, which obviously rocked. Deano ended up with a spiky receding mess.

Maybe he wanted to be noticed like Frankie Mac who left out the toner on his barnet and the rest is history! McAvennie pulled off peroxide4 a tad better than Ashton though! Didn't TC go for the blonde look at some point?

Travelled up to Man City for the QF…he was unplayable that night… proper footballing centre forward… knew where the goal was but boy could he play… problem being when he joined us he had the look of someone who was not going to be around for long… even now he’s the oldest 30 odd year old I have ever seen…

It was a good call because that bleached Barnet was awful; the only thing he did wrong.

Nah only joking. My son gave me signed framed photo of him for Xmas which I'm looking at right now. Great centre forward. Could score brilliant goals and the scrappy tap ins.

Was gutted by his injury.
